The Elevé Project: Cate Hurlin
Posted on
Introducing our next muse, the phenomenal
Cate Hurlin.
Earlier this year we had the pleasure of
watching this incredible dancer perform while
visiting NYC. We’re honored that she
agreed to share with us how she’s staying
busy during quarantine.
Q: What's keeping you inspired in isolation?
A: I’m so amazed at what our dance community has done to adapt to these difficult times. Technology is amazing! I’m so inspired by all the video projects I see online now.
Q: Since lockdown you have participated in virtual galas, performances and festivals. What has that been like? After COVID-19, do you see companies continuing to create content virtually as a way of connecting with a broader audience as a good idea?
A: I was in the ABT spring virtual gala! I did a piece by Jessica Lang called, Let Me Sing Forevermore. It was so much fun to dance in the middle of Central Park. It was especially nice to listen to people clapping in the distance at the park as if we had an audience.
I think that because of the pandemic, dance companies everywhere are exploring the digital world. I think that it’s an amazing growth for the dance world to expand into the 21st century digital life!
Q: You and your boyfriend, fellow ABT dancer Aran Bell, have been busy working in the studio, training together and we are loving your video projects like your White Swan pas de Deux at Kaatsbaan. Do you plan on making more?
A: We plan to perform in Kaatsbaan’s dance festival and our friend Jose Sebastian’s Hamptons Dance Project. Aran and I will perform Spring Waters on September 5th, and I will dance a new solo created by Caleb Teicher on September 6th.
Q: Have any cross-training tips to stay strong while not having rehearsals all day or access to a proper gym/pilates or ballet studio?
A: I am fortunate enough I have access to a local ballet studio in Greenwich. Even though I am taking a normal class everyday, it is still not as intense as a 7 hour work day. Stamina will be everyone's enemy when the pandemic is over. So my tip for dancers out there is to keep your stamina up. Run around the park, or just run around in your living room, anything to get your heart rate up.
Q: Have you learned anything new about yourself, or picked up a new hobby during quarantine?
A: I don’t have my driver’s license, and I’ve never found time during my normal schedule to practice. So I’m taking advantage of this time, and every weekend my mom takes me to an empty parking lot to practice driving.
Q: Where is the first place you'd like to travel to when it's safe to do so again?
A: Honestly, I can’t wait to be back in a theater. It doesn’t matter where the theater is. Due to the pandemic, ABT unfortunately had to cancel our biggest season of the year at the Metropolitan Opera House. I feel like I’ve missed out on my “theater time.”
Q: What has been your go to Ballet/Dance look for virtual classes?
A: For my online classes I have worn a variety of things; my normal ballet clothes, work out clothes and even PJ’s have made an appearance in my zoom classes.
Q: What is your favorite Elevé style?
A: My favorite Elevé style is my custom Anna Leotard I made on the Elevé website. My favorite part about it is the fabric I chose: Anchors Aweigh!
